ABSTRACT

In this work, the fossil gastropods and scaphopods from the upper Tortonian deposits of Arroyo Trujillo site (Cantillana, Seville), on the northern margin of the Guadalquivir Basin, have been studied. 194 gastropod and 8 scaphopod taxa have been identified; all of them located in sections III and IV of the five ones differentiated in the site (Cárdenas et al., 2017). The taphonomic analysis suggests certain reworking of the specimens (transport and abrasion). In addition, low degree of bioerosion and incrustation shows short residence time and rapid burial. The geographic distribution of gastropods and scaphopods during Neogene in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Paratethys domains is analysed. The study fossil assemblages show affinities with the Mediterranean faunas. Migratory movements of some species between the different marine domains have been also studied. A problematic and uncertain study case is the dispersion of Turritella incisaeformis. Regarding environmental conditions, the fossil assemblages indicate: 1) a bathymetric range from 20 to 40 m for section III and from 50 to 80 m for section IV; 2) normal salinity; and, 3) tropical-subtropical climate. This palaeoclimatic inference is also supported by the abundance thermophilic gastropod species.
